ORAMA has expressed indignation at the heavy fines imposed yesterday at the request of the European Commission on the FNSEA, “Jeunes Agriculteurs”, FNB and FNPL.
The European authorities, by continuing to argue in totally abstract terms on the basis of flawed premises, have now moved the clock back a hundred years for the issue of recognition of professional/trade associations. Must the conclusion then be that they prefer to deal with unions and associations that merely reiterate the same extremist protests and dialectics rather than dealing with those that wish to play a constructive role? Whatever the case may be, this surreal behaviour is a disturbing sign for the future of the European Union.
Such behaviour is quite disgraceful. It was because Europe was incapable of dealing with the situation that arose with BSE that these unions and associations found guilty here had to undertake the actions with which they were charged, and did so in a bid to save tens of thousands of farmers. The European Commission would have gained more credence by showing some restraint on this matter.
