Bioethanol and Fuel Quality
The European Commission moves ahead on regulations
AGPM, AGPB and the CGB applaud the European Commission’s proposal to modify the fuel quality directive.
The proposal includes provision for fuel dealers to market a blend with high biofuel content (up to 10% ethanol by volume) and to introduce distinctive labelling at the pump (indicating low and high biofuel blends).
These measures open up prospects for higher ethanol content in fuel blends and will make it possible to achieve the European objective for biofuel blends for 2010 (5.75% calculated as energy content).
AGPM, AGPB and CGB have called on the European Council and the European Parliament to adopt this proposal without delay so that it can be effectively transposed into national legislation in the different countries by December 31, 2008, as required by the directive.
As France has decided to be ahead with the implementation of European objectives, prompt action must be taken to study and implement measures to ensure that the national targets for biofuel are met by 2008, i.e. 5.75% energy content, or 8.65% by volume.
