The European Union Council of Agriculture Ministers is meeting on November 18, 19 and 20, and should reach an agreement on the CAP Health Check. For grain producers, the Council must reject the European Commission’s plan for a system of intervention by tender to replace the current intervention system for wheat.
The system of intervention by tender would mean unprecedented drops in prices for grain growers, and would gradually deter farmers from growing these crops.
To date, public authorities in France have not taken a firm stand on this, in line with the importance of European grain for the world food supply, and of the national grain sector for the country’s economy. They have not presented adequate arguments calling for an interim solution via a number of changes to the current intervention system. But it is not too late to take the right steps, provided that a firm position is adopted focusing on the issues at stake
