Surprise Demonstration outside the Elysée Palace Full ORAMA backing for young farmers

12/17/2009

ORAMA, the union of professional associations representing French grain and oil and protein seed producers, wishes to express its total support for the young farmers from Greater Paris and surrounding regions who held a surprise demonstration early this morning in front of the presidential Elysée Palace.

As was the case for the demonstration on October 16 outside Fouquet’s restaurant, these members of professional association have legitimately and forcefully expressed their views, showing the public authorities how intolerable the situation will be for arable crop farmers under conditions applying in France to implement the CAP Health Check in 2010*;  farmers in this sector have seen their income drop by 51% in 2009 after a loss of 34% in 2008.

The decision to introduce these conditions was based on the argument that grain and oil and protein seed prices would remain high in the long term, but the public authorities must now give clear signs that they genuinely intend to rectify their mistake.

* a levy of €60 to €100 per hectare on direct payments for grain and oil and protein seed crops
