Most silage maize is grown in western France. It is the most widely grown fodder crop (90% of the total) and is staple feed for cattle, which explains why it is in the west of France where there is more than half of the country’s dairy production. Two cattle farming regions — Pays de Loire and Brittany — have 40% of the total silage maize acreage. In other regions (with the exception of Normandy) the percentage is never more than 5% of the national acreage.
